Unranked Georgia defeats #16 Gonzaga
Georgia (7-1) upset Gonzaga (9-3) on Saturday 96 to 83.
The main reason for the upset: Turnovers.
Gonzaga had a season-high 21 turnovers. Georgia outscored Gonzaga 30-11 in points off turnovers alone.
Gonzaga coach Mark Few said his team was simply overwhelmed.
"There was no doubt today that Georgia had a stronger conviction to win the game," Few said. "They were hungrier. They were tougher, beating us to every 50-50 ball. You win games that way.
Twenty-one turnovers...it's just guys trying to do too much," he said.
Derek Raivio led Gonzaga with 19 points, ending his streak of 20-point games end at eight as he went 3-of-7 from 3-point range. Jeremy Pargo added 17 points, 12 in the first half, and Josh Heytvelt had 15 in the matchup of Bulldogs.
For Georgia, Levi Stukes scored 25 points and Sundiata Gaines added a season-high 21.
Georgia, with only one loss this year, clearly made a statement with this game being nationally televised.
Gonzaga seems to do well against highly ranked teams, but sometimes struggles against others.
Sean Mallon agrees:
"The funny thing is this team plays better when we're the underdog," he says. "We need to approach every game the same way."

Gonzaga star Derek Raivio was named the West Coast Conference (WCC) men's basketball November Player of the Month.
The native of Vancouver, Wash., helped lead Gonzaga to a 7-1 record in the month of November as he scored in double-digits in seven of the eight games, including six games of 20-plus points.
He began the season with 21 points against Eastern Washington University, then posted back-to-back 21-point performances in the Bulldogs wins over the University of Texas-San Antonio and then second-ranked University of North Carolina in the semifinals of the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip Off.
He rounded out the month by scoring 20 points versus Butler University in the NIT title game - the Bulldogs only loss in the month - 24 points versus the University of Idaho and 20 points against Portland State University.
For the month, Raivio averaged 18.9 points per game to go along with 4.5 rebounds per game and 2.3 assists per game.
Raivio is one of the NCAA’s best free throw and three point shooters, percentage wise. Derek has shown great leadership this year being one of only two seniors on this years team, with the other being Sean Mallon.

So it’s official, UW and Gonzaga basketball teams will not be playing each other next season, marking the end of a 9 year series.
The recent game between University of Washington and Gonzaga could be the last…in a while.
These two excellent college basketball programs have ceased regular season play between each other. While the two may revisit the idea, it’s the end of a great rivalry, unless they meet in the NCAA tournament.
I see two sides to this decision:
While this rivalry will be missed, I do see a point to this after Gonzaga beat University of Washington. The loss gave UW it's first loss of the year and knocked them out of the Top 10. |

The Year of the Punter?
While the College Football season is coming to an end, it seems some players are finding other means of publicity. Punters, who usually:
- fly under the radar
- don't get interviewed
- are never in the spotlight
- and never get cheered for (the only noise a crowd will ever make for them is the "boos" after a shanked punt)
seem to get more publicity for their off the field actions.
From Backup Punters stabbing the starting punter in the leg to Off Campus Assaults
it's been a long year for these unsung heroes. Perhaps it's built up frustration?
